Swimming Pools

There are leisure facilities at a number of the local hotels namely:

Sea Fishing

For those of you who love Sea fishing, it is available from Falmouth, Penzance, Praa Sands and Newquay. A choice of long or short trips is available and equipment is usually provided. However if you have difficulty with your gear, you can always obtain some either at Porthleven (see http://www.praasands.org.uk/porthleven.htm) or through Newtown Angling.

Coarse Fishing

Cornwall has superb well stocked lakes around the County so that you will never need to carry your gear too far. Coarse fishing is available at Porth Lake, Siblyback Lake, Stithians Lake and Gwinear Pools for example.

Cornish Extreme Centre - Dirt Biking - BMX Track

(8 Minutes from Salem B&B). The Track at Portreath is home to the finest dirt jumping facility in the United Kingdom. Set on a five-acre floodlit site, the trails offer a physical challenge to riders of all ages and abilities. Bring your BMX and join in the fun.

  Directions - From the A30, following signs for The Treasure Park (formerly Cornish Goldsmiths), turn off at the Redruth intersection drive towards Portreath on the B3300. Cornish Extreme Centre is after The Treasure Park (details in Mining below) approximately 1/4 mile on the right

Quad Biking (5 minutes from Salem B&B) At the ATV Centre in Blackwater they claim to have the largest selection of 'Quads' and the best circuits in the country. Never tried a quad before? No problem! Start out on a smaller machine and a simpler circuit. Looking for speed and thrills? Take out the bigger quads and try one of the more adventurous circuits! They also have a separate learner circuit. Looking for something more competitive? Ask about their racing events and go for glory... Full safety kit is supplied and all machines are maintained to racing standards. Wear your old clothes though as mud prevails.

Surf Hire - North Coast

Surfing is available on most beaches in high season with the opportunity to hire your kit. This can be done in particular at St Agnes (15 minutes drive), Porthtowan (10 minutes drive), and Watergate Bay (30 minutes drive). Tuition is also available at these locations.


Cornwall has a wealth of beautiful gardens all within easy reach of Salem B&B. There are many, but we recommend the following:

Trelissick Gardens - South Coast (18 minutes from Salem B&B) This garden and estate is renowned for its glorious position at the head of the Carrick Roads, with panoramic views down the estuary southwards towards Falmouth and the open sea. Walks through 500 acres of riverside woods and parkland sweeping down to the water's edge can be enjoyed all the year round. Dogs are accepted on leads all year round.

Cinemas and Theatres

The Hall for Cornwall Theatre - music and much more. Hall for Cornwall is a theatre in Truro. It is the largest theatre in Cornwall offering a mix of live theatre, musicals, children's shows, gigs and fringe music shows. Eden Project (50 minutes from Salem B&B) This is Cornwall's most popular attraction. Come and discover a giant global garden and explore the huge rainforest, the three biggest greenhouses in the world not to mention art and architecture inspired by the natural world. For children they also have new trails and endless leafy places to play with shortcuts, hideaways, stepping stones and sandpits. Food and facilities are also available. Skating is available in mid winter.

Mines, Mining and Engine Houses

Geevor Mine (1 hour from Salem B&B)
Geevor Mine is the largest preserved mining site in the UK. This is to be found between Sennen Cover and St Ives on the winding North Coast road in the far West of Cornwall next to the Atlantic. Here Cornwall's mining history comes to life. Until 1990 Geevor was a working mine, but now it is a museum. You may enjoy the graphic guided under-ground tour through 18th/19th and 20th century workings given by an ex-miner who knows his drills. Afterwards you can relax at the café and shop.

Poldark Mine (45 minutes from Salem B&B) Follow in the footsteps of 18th Century Cornish Tin Miners on the most atmospheric Mine Tour in Britain. Poldark Mine is a free entry site with something for all the family. About 40 minutes from Salem on the Helston Road.

Treasure Park - Cornish Goldsmiths - Portreath (about 15 minutes from Salem B&B) Treasure Park is situated just 1 mile north of the A30 on the B3300 Portreath road. This popular destination can be enjoyed whatever the weather, as it accommodates both indoor and outdoor activities. Let the kids dig for buried Pirate Treasure in the 'Gem Scoop Cave', or have a go at panning for real gold in the authentic water trough. Next try the 'Pot of Gold' pottery, where everyone can have a go at throwing and painting a pot. Step back in history at Tolgus Tin and find out how tin was produced over a period of four centuries in Cornwall. There is a new 'virtual' effect of travel on a railway within a mine. Open all year. There is free parking and admission.

4 minutes from Salem B&B and offers beauty treatments and sports injury treatments. A few minutes of pamper and vital pain relief should be enjoyed.

Chacewater Village (2 minutes from Salem B&B) Salem B&B is on the outskirts of Chacewater and it is situated on the Truro to Redruth road approximately 5 miles West of Truro. Chacewater has a rich history - it lies in the centre of a great mining district and the landscape contains many reminders of this former industry. In addition to the 3 pubs there are also 2 general stores, a post office and an excellent traditional Cornish bakery.

Killiow Golf Course (5 minutes from Salem B&B) can easily be reached through Kea or leave by taking the A39 road from Truro towards Falmouth and turn right at the first roundabout with the petrol station to it. The 18 hole course is set in the magnificent grounds of historic Killiow Estate and presents a challenge to golfers of all standards (as it so states itself).

Bicycle Rides along old Tramways and Trails

These trails reach parts of Cornwall that motor cars cannot reach. Enjoy a day cycling traffic free (almost) along historic tramroads and railways. Take in the sights of old mine workings and enjoy the tranquil wooded valleys, hedgerows and waters.

The Camel Trail (45 minutes from Salem B&B) takes you between Wadebridge and Padstow. This is highly recommended. It is flat all the way and along the banks of the Camel Estuary and it is brilliant for bird watching. Look out, for example, for the white Egrets. Don't forget to enjoy Rick Stein's crunchy Fish & Chips at the end of the Padstow Camel Trail or you may choose to take the Devoran to Portreath Beach route on the Bissoe Tramway Trail. All of it is a family jaunt and great fun.

Goonbell Riding Centre specialises in novice and nervous riders, young and old. Half hour trips or longer can be arranged. For more experienced riders a 1.5 hour hack to St Agnes' Beacon is great fun. The centre has a wide range of horses and ponies. Everyone is welcome. The atmosphere is relaxed
